Jack and Jill, like the nursery my rhyme (get it?) is the story of Adam Sandler and his twin sister played by Adam Sandler (funny already, right?) and their annual “awkward” get-together for Thanksgiving, with hilarious consequences that ends in learning and hugging, and a sloppy happy ever after.

Adam Sandler as Jill and Jack in Jack and Jill

Adam Sandler used to be the golden boy of movie comedy and still made three forays into serious acting with Punch drunk Love,, Reign Over Me and Funny People, however Jack and Jill takes a huge step backwards, beyond the puerile humour of the Water boy, Happy Gilmore and even Billy Madison.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Happy Gilmore, the Water Boy and even Billy Madison, so I’m not a total comedy snob. I freely admit that I laughed out loud when I watched The Wedding Singer, however I can only assume that Jack and Jill is aimed at diehard Adam Sandler fans who have recently fallen down and hit their head, hard.

Imagine the scene, in swanky Hollywood production office, a bunch of Hollywood producers are sat around a large and expensive desk, scratching their heads trying to work out will begin next sure-fire box office hit… when suddenly one of them pipes up, “HEY! Remember that guy Adam Sandler, he’s funny, yeah? We like him, he’s funny, he’s the man of the moment, everybody likes Adam Sandler films….let’s just have another Adam Sandler film!” The dollar signs flash in every eye, heads nod enthusiastic agreement, it’s almost as if Grownups, Bedtime Stories, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry, Click, the Longest Yard and 50 First Dates, WERE just bad dreams and never actually happened. Somehow they’d all been transported back to the last millennium when Big Daddy and Little Nicky had audiences laughing so hard that spilt their popcorn.

Then one executive pipes up, “Wait, I know one thing funnier than Adam Sandler…Adam Sandler in a fat suit…” Spontaneous and unbridled applause breaks out in the room. The producers squeal with delight, “This is it! We’re talking Sundance, were talking Cannes, we’re talking Oscars! We’ll all be rich! Audiences will never tire of funnyman Adam Sandler and never, ever tire of a fat suit! This has been a good morning at the office. Let’s all go home early.”

Then a young up-and-coming executive producer says, “Wait. We know Adam Sandler is funny, we know fat suits are funny…dare I suggest, gentlemen (no woman would greenlight this film) there is a holy Hollywood trinity of comedy…and it’s Adam Sandler…in a fat suit…in drag!”

This creates a black hole of creativity from whence not one iota of intelligence, wit, charm, beauty or truth can escape. The resulting film is Jack and Jill.

The Internet movie database claims that Adam Sandler accidentally exposed his genitalia when he played Jill due to wearing a mini-skirt, if that thought has you cracking up with laughter, then you might want to go and see this film, otherwise avoid, both the film and the genitalia.
