Jim Carrey returns to the screen for another high concept quirky comedy from director Mark Waters, and writers Sean Anders and John Morris. And they have produced a very formulaic story, but that’s rather the point of a family film.

The kids don’t want to see anything too challenging, they want to be entertained and while adults will be able to see it all coming, there are a lot of really funny scenes and genuinely entertaining moments to keep them amused. Carrey’s character, Tom Popper grew up isolated from his father, an explorer and therefore is bound to repeat that pattern with his own kids. Which indeed he has, flinging himself into work to the detriment of his family life. then one day, his mysterious absentee father sets things right by throwing him a curveball. Well curve bird. Six penguins turn up and although Popper tries to get rid of them, when his ex wife and kids turn up to celebrate his son’s birthday, they fall for the strangely out of place birds. Suddenly the balance of his life changes and he starts to reconnect with his children, but at the expense of his work life.

Jim Carrey puts in a surprisingly sober performance, mellowing with age it seems and plays the dedicated workaholic well. Carla Guagnio as ex wife Amanda and the apparently immortal Angela Lansbury provide tremendous support and the child actors aren’t bad or embarrassing either. But the real stars are the penguins, all six of them lovingly CGI animated and each given their own distinct personality, no mean feat, when they are acting alongside real performers. Carrey works particularly well with them, interacting in a very believable manner, still clearly a master of physical comedy. This film has already garnered great reviews from those who see it for what it is, a light-hearted, sometimes slapstick family movie, and everyone involved in the production knew exactly what they were making. Slick and funny, with a heart of gold.
