Just Go with It

Starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston, “Just Go With It” is a cautionary yet hilarious tale of how one little lie can snowball into a huge deception. Sandler plays a plastic surgeon, Danny, who has lied to the woman he loves, Palmer, played by Brooklyn Decker. Anniston’s character, Katherine, Sandler’s assistant must pose as his soon to be divorced wife to keep up the pretence but unfortunately things are about to get a little more complicated than that and a trip to Hawaii turns into a recipe for confusion with lots of comic moments. But will Danny choose the right woman for him?

This is a typical Adam Sandler vehicle and all the better for it. Your credulity will be stretched several times but then this isn’t meant to be a heart rending examination of the human condition. Having said that there are some wonderful emotional moments, never swamping the comedy but adding to the whole. It’s a well scripted piece with not a moment wasted and no opportunity for comedy left unexplored. There are some unexpected moments, this isn’t your standard Rom Com, it’s one of those great comedies where the trouble builds and builds until you really can’t see how Danny is going to get out of the situation.

Brooklyn Decker may appear to be there to provide some very welcome eye candy but shows herself to be a natural actress, giving the role of Palmer exactly what it needs. Nick Swardson and Nicole Kidman provide excellent back up as a couple who are just too cool to be living on this planet (well, they think they are) and the movie even boasts kids who can act which is always a bonus. It is Jennifer Aniston walks off with the honours however giving a perfectly judged performance and working extremely well with Sandler. Director Dennis Dugan has worked with Sandler before and knows how to get the best out of his star and the supporting cast.

Fabulously funny, frequently over the top and occasionally moving without dropping too much into sentimentality, “Just Go With It” is a great film and another triumph for Sandler and his moviemaking team. Go and see it and prepare to be impressed by Aniston, it’s a great way to relax at the weekend and while it may be formulaic in places, that works with the film rather than against it.
